Half the keys on my OP-1 suddenly stopped working
If you have one of these machines and it breaks, you’re pretty much on your own. In my experience the support from Teenage Engineering is almost non existent.
The good thing is these machines can be fixed and spare parts are available.
So in this post I’ll go through how I fixed my OP-1…
Take it apart
I removed the keyboard to see if I could see any cracks in the UI board. My thinking was that excessive pressure may have been put onto the encoders whilst it was in its case, possible causing a small fracture in the PCB and subsequent break in a copper trace. But it all looked fine.
Remove the key mechanism
Remove the screws underneath with a philips #00
Now the front interface should be free – apart from the two ribbons connecting it
Have a look around
Admire the artwork

It’s nice that it comes with a whole new set of keys, and also the screen plastic.
Put it all back in reverse order
Yesssss
Not only does it work but the screen and the keys look like new.
I knew that if I couldn’t fix this it I probably would not be getting another any time soon. Mainly because the price of these new is at least £1100!! I bought mine years ago for £400.
Judging by the inside of this machine I think it’s safe to say that parts can be repaired and replaced with relative ease.
